Janáček - Mládí (“Youth”) for Wind Sextet
Beethoven - String Quintet in C minor, Op. 104
Dohnányi - Sextet in C major, Op. 37
with guest artist Petronel Malan
Our last concert of the season takes us from darkened cloisters and murky depths to the bright light of day, bringing the unique timbres of two twentieth-century Eastern European composers together with one of Beethoven’s seldom-heard masterpieces. Czech composer Leos Janáček recalls his own childhood as a choirboy in the imposing Brno abbey in a piece simply titled Youth. Frustrated with lesser composers’ arrangements of his works, Beethoven set the bar even higher by re-composing his third piano trio into his last full String Quintet; its brooding key of C minor fits in quite well with the two modern works. Our final work, the Sextet in the sunny key of C major by Hungarian composer Ernő Dohnányi, is an almost cinematic tour-de-force for a virtuoso pianist joined by an unusual combination of clarinet, horn, violin, viola and cello. It’s an especially fitting piece for Tulsa Camerata’s second collaboration with three-time Grammy® nominated pianist Petronel Malan.
