7:00 p.m.

Bartók - Contrasts, for Violin, Clarinet and Piano
Takemitsu - Between Tides, for Piano Trio (Takemitsu has been postponed until next season - stay tuned)
Ligeti - Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet
Dvořák - String Quintet No. 2 in G, Op. 77

For our February concert, we’ve assembled four works inspired by the folk music and idioms of the composers’ native lands. Originally commissioned by Benny Goodman, Béla Bartók’s Contrasts draws on traditional Hungarian melodies and even the patterns of everyday speech in Magyar. György Ligeti’s early Bagatelles for Wind Quintet show how deeply influenced he was by Bartók’s music; one of the movements even memorializes his fellow countryman’s passing. Rounding out this concert is a String Quintet by the undisputed master of folk and classical fusion, Antonín Dvořák. His work for a string quartet joined by a double bass bears the dedication “to my nation,” and freely incorporates Czech folk songs and dances.
