Chamber music is typically collaborative and egalitarian, but sometimes one musician gets to be a little more equal than the others. Our December concert features members of Tulsa Camerata taking solo turns with their colleagues. Antonio Vivaldi composed more concertos for the bassoon than for any other solo instrument besides the violin; this Bassoon Concerto shows his special affinity for the instrument. Johannes Matthias Sperger’s Quartet is one of the earliest chamber works to feature the double bass in a solo role. Robert Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen has the viola and the clarinet “narrating” fairy tales to a piano accompaniment. Franz Waxman – best remembered for his scores to films like Sunset Boulevard and Rear Window – gives the violin and the piano plenty to do in his clever set of holiday-themed variations. Bringing the evening to a joyous close is Johann Sebastian Bach’s Second Orchestral Suite, justifiably famous for its virtuosic solo flute.
